Hi davidvj,
I don't add camera in mint9-gnome.
In digikam>import,I use the second entry 'usb storage devices' instead of first entry 'cameras',because photos imported through any one of them  are not remembered/excluded by the other .So better to keep only one of them. Moreover Gnome can not be configured to auto launch concerned KDE application after connecting/inserting the device e.g. digikam for cameras,k3b for blank CDs and DVDs.

Am I missing any feature of digikam by not adding camera ?
Using DK 1.2 in mint9.
Does using lensfun etc get affected  by not adding camera?

Not as far as I know, as long as you can import your photos.
For lensfun, DK tries to use the metadata, or you can select the proper
equipment. A bigger problem might be the lensfun database itself (it doesn't
seem to have my lenses, for instance)
